In Mayan society, the gods were born and were subjected to rites that advanced their spirtual dimension so that they were transformed to die and be reborn. The jaguar (B'alam) cried, it was said, it sang to the moon to see out (or, say goodbye) to the lost children.

Within the religion of the Wixarica (Huichol), the hikuri (in Spanish known as peyote) is one of the most important religious concepts within their beliefs. The hikuri is used by indigenous people as a ritual, for communication between the earthly world and the divine.
